THIRD TRIMESTER ART
PAINTINGS INSPIRED BY PABLO PICASSO
When one adorable second grader asked if we could study Pablo Picasso, of course the art teacher had to say yes! We studied some of his paintings done during the late 1950’s. (The Studio Pigeons, Cannes (1957) and Studio (pigeons) (Velazquez)(1957). These paintings show views through a window, most likely paying homage to his friend and rival Henry Matisse who also painted window views. Below you can see the second graders finishing up their paintings.
WHEN I GROW UP PORTRAITS BY FIRST GRADE
We have some ballerinas, a nanny, teachers, a dad, police officers, even a football player.
THIRD GRADE SUNRISES
This art project required color mixing as the students painted around their suns mixing yellows, oranges, reds, and more!
FINAL PROJECT IN EIGHTH GRADE
Eighth grade is working on their final project. First, they constructed a mold out of card board, then they filled it with plaster of Paris. After it dried, they sanded it, and finally they painted it.
On the last day of art, the students painted their letters.
PORTRAIT PAINTING IN KINDERGARTEN
Kindergarten students are working on their portraits.
Here are some of the finished portraits!
PRESCHOOL PAINTS WITH STRINGS
We started by talking about the famous artist Jackson Pollock who flung and dripped paint to create his masterpieces. Then, the students were each given a piece of string hot glued to a popsicle stick to create their own masterpieces! Check out their beautiful art work!!!
CREATING CAKES
Last week, 6th Grade studied the artist Wayne Thiebaud and his work. Today, they used cereal boxes to create the armature for their sculptures and then Claycrete Paper-Mache to frost their cakes. Next, we will use caulk and clay to add details, and finally they will be ready for paint.
PENCILS FROM PAPER MACHE
Third grade constructed the armature (underneath part) of their pencil sculptures today. Once they completed it, they covered it with paper strips and paper mache paste. Next week, we will paint them!
SELF-PORTRAITS FROM MODELING CLAY
Fifth grade is working on their self-portraits made from modeling clay. A quote from one of the students, “Oh no! I have to remodel my nose!” They are having so much fun with this!!!!

VAN GOGH
Grade 2 has been studying Vincent Van Gogh. Did you know Van Gogh only sold one painting during his lifetime? Here, they are finishing up paintings inspired by the painting Wheatfield with Crows.
GRADE 5 SUNFLOWERS
Grade 5 has also studied Vincent Van Gogh. We looked at his paintings, and observed sunflowers. The students drew sunflowers, painted them, and then used construction paper crayons to add paintbrush-like texture to their art work.
PRESCHOOL
Preschool is working on paintings that started with dots. Dots were connected to create lines. Lines were connected to create shapes. Then, we added color using watercolor paints. Look how beautiful and different they all are!!

GRADE 4 QUILLING
4th grade is learning about quilling or paper filigree. It involves rolling strips of paper into curls and then gluing. We started with painting the papers. Then, we used rulers to make straight lines. Check back for pictures showing the students curling their papers.
Quilled snow clouds...
MIXING TINTS
Grade 6 started this lesson by observing stacked blocks with a bright light shining on them. Then, they created what they observed by choosing colors and mixing tints to lighten the colors.
WINTER SELFIES
Third grade started the process of creating a selfie with printmaking! Each student used a ball point pen to mark the designs of their hat into a piece of styrofoam. They used brayers to apply the ink and then pressed or “massaged” a paper onto the ink. The magical part was pulling the print which I was able to photograph below for some of the students.

7 AND 8 ONE POINT PERSPECTIVE COLLAGE
Below you see 7th and 8th grade arranging their cut painted papers into interesting collages. In some of the photos, you can see their one point perspective drawings.
KINDER PRINTMAKING
Kindergarten started by painting with three colors. The pictures below show them using bubble wrap to make prints on their paintings. Next week, we will use toilet paper tubes to make more prints on our paintings! There were many “Oooo’s” and “Aaaah’s” during the process.
GRADE 1 WEAVING
First grade filled their papers with designs using oil pastels and then covered them with paint. Today, we cut them into owls and the students wove feathers into the bellies of their owls. We used words like “pattern,” “checkerboard,” “over and under.” This is a skill we work on every year in art class!

THE ECLIPSE
Many classes started the year creating art that had to do with the eclipse occurring on August 21st. First and second created art work showing the different phases of the eclipse. Fourth and sixth learned about the artist Alma Thomas (1891-1978), who painted the eclipse. They used her work as an inspiration for their work. Fifth grade created an op art eclipse using Sharpie markers and Crayola color sticks.

SHAPES
Preschool started the year reviewing shapes with cookie cutters and play dough. Later, the cookie cutters were used to make shape prints. Next, we will use oil pastels to add color to our art work.
ELEMENTS OF ART...LINE
Kindergarten is working with line, one of the Elements of Art. They traced lines using rulers and then painted them with fluorescent tempera cakes.
First grade also talked about line and used all types of lines to create these beautiful, unique works of art. Once they were drawn, the students used tempera cakes to paint them.
UPPER GRADES DO BATIK
7th and 8th graders are learning about the ancient art of Batik. Using torn up sheets, white glue, and acrylic paint each students created their own fall leaf batiked fabric.

GRADE 3 LEARNS ABOUT MONARCH BUTTERFLIES
After studying the monarchs with Mrs. Gordon in their classroom, we created some beautiful monarch butterflies together in the art room using painted papers. See our final result!!!!
GRADE 3 AND 4 CASTLES
In preparation for the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, 3rd and 4th grade studied pictures of castles (including Wartburg Castle where Martin Luther lived for a time). We talked about the facade, the towers, the battlements, the window shapes, and the brickwork. Afterwards, each student was able to design their own castle. Below are pictures of the children starting their design. The classroom was absolutely quiet! The students were totally engaged!
GRID PAINTING IN GRADES 7 AND 8
In preparation for the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, the 7th and 8th graders turned a 6 inch square picture of Luther’s Rose into a 6 foot square painting. How were they able to successfully achieve this? The picture was divided into small squares and each student took a few one inch squares. Using math, careful calculations, and some visualization, the one inch square was turned into a 12 inch square. It was definitely a collaborative effort!!!
KINDERGARTEN STILL LIFE PAINTINGS
The children traced their apples and then used primary colors to paint them. This was a great opportunity to teach them about primary (red, yellow, blue) and secondary (orange and green) colors!!!
GRADE 6 STARRY NIGHT PUMPKIN PATCH
After discussing Van Gogh and viewing his painting STARRY NIGHT, 6th grade used tempera paint, model magic clay, and glitter to create these beauties!
GRADE 5 REPTILE RELIEF
Grade 5 is working on the background for their reptiles. They picked two analogous colors (close to each other on the color wheel) for each section of their background. They loved doing this, especially blending the colors. Sometimes, faces get a little color on them, too!!!
GRADE 2 FOX IN THE FALL PAINTINGS
This project is a multi-step project. In the picture, the students are working on the tree trunks, using cardboard to scrape the white, brown, and black paint. Later, they added leaves and the fox to their paintings.
